Type 2 and You

With the annoucement of well loved cooking star Paula Deen developing Type 2 diabetes I think its time we talk about this disease. First lets talk facts. Diabetes affects an alarming rate of People in the United States. According to the Center for Disease control 25.8 million people or 8.3% of the U.S. population are either known diabetics or currently have it and dont know it. This is such a scary prevalent disease that is likely either affecting you, or someone you care about.

Why is type 2 dibetes so bad?

Well it is the leading cause of…

  • kidney failure
  • limb amputation (not from traumatic injury to the limb)
  • blindness in adults
  • highly contributes to heart disease and stroke
  • Its the 7th leading cause of death in the U.S.

I have diabetes… what are some ways I can prevent these things from happening to me?

The Benefits of Exercise. The E Word… even a small amount of regular activity can greatly improve your health and help your body use blood sugar. 30mins of daily exercise is recommended as a minimum. Exercise is anything like..

  • walking
  • running
  • swimming
  • playing sports
  • dancing
  • Zumbing

*Incorporating resistance training, or weight bearing exercises like lifting weights or weight lifting machines, is also recommended as a form of exercise for people with diabetes.

How does exercise really help someone with Diabetes?

  • Helps your body use blood sugar and insulinlowering blood sugar levels that tend to be high with diabetes
  • Help you control your weight
  • Improve your circulation
  • Helps reduce blood pressure -Normal BP is 120/80
  • Helps reduce risk for heart disease – like heart attacks, congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, congenital heart disease
  • Helps reduce cholesterol levels– a fatty waxy substance and can build  in the body’s arteries narrowing the space for blood to flow to the heart
  • Helps reduce triglyceride levels– the measurement of fats we eat in the blood used to provide energy to the body
  • It can also improve your mental outlook: exercise decreases stress and helps you sleep better
  • Helps improve the health of blood vessels and nerves– lowers sugars preventing damage to brain, eyes, feet, and legs
Get Active Today…it could save your life! Even a little more than you did yesterday will help.
